Respondus LockDown Browser is software that is used for a secure testing environment. It prevents access to everything else on the computer except LockDown Browser and the quiz in Canvas. For example, you cannot open other applications, use shortcut keys (copy, paste), print, etc. Your instructor may make exceptions to allow you to access certain external websites or a calculator.

In addition to LockDown Browser, your instructor may require Monitor, which uses your webcam and microphone to record you during the quiz/test/exam.

If your instructor requires LockDown Browser, they should provide you with information in the course.

Resources

There are two types of quizzes in Canvas, Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes. The way you access the quiz with LockDown Browser will depend on the type of quiz your instructor uses. A help guide for each type of quiz is provided below.

Accessibility and Voice Over

ReadSpeaker, the text-to-speech tool we have in Canvas, will only work in LockDown Browser if you're able to point and click to highlight text. However, NVDA and the native text-to-speech tool on your computer should work and can be launched using shortcut keys. For more information, please visit the Accessibility with LockDown Browser guide.

We also encourage you to use the native text-to-speech tool on your computer for New Quizzes in Canvas. For more information, click the "Next" button below to visit Text-to-Speech Options with LockDown Browser.
